Nam Chau (Dry Curry Mee) @ Old Town, Ipoh

Nam Chau

Nam Chau

Hmm, my favourite breakfast spot in Ipoh Old Town; Kedai Kopi Nam Chau. I was introduced to this place by my aunt who frequents this place with her family almost every Sunday (the shop’s closed on Saturdaythough). Famous for  the curry noodles, and various toasts/sandwiches, as well as their coffee, Nam Chau has opened up another branch in Bandar Baru Menglembu recently.

In addition to that, Nam Chau has another branch in First Garden of Ipoh (as of November 2009), which is doing quite well itself.

Other than Nam Chau’s famous curry noodles, they also serve chicken soup noodle (or Kai See Hor Fun, roughly translated to Chicken Shreds with Flat Rice Noodles in Soup), roasted pork, and a strangely-named noodle dish named ‘Tar Lan Wun’, roughly translated to ‘Break the Bowl’, which is translucent strands of glass vermicelli noodles (tang hoon) in soup, and served with fishballs and Chinese crullers (Yau Char Kwai). For a lighter meal, they have various toasts and sandwiches, the most memorable being half boiled eggs on toast, RM2.60, and the usual kaya-butter toasts. Another one of my personal favourite is their deep-fried sesame buns, with lotus paste fillings. A serving of 3 pieces is priced at RM2.00.

Location : Nam Chau Coffee Shop @ 54, Jalan Bandar Timah, 30000 Ipoh, Perak. Opens from 7am until 3pm. Closed on Saturdays. The other two outlets are in Menglembu Baru, and another in First Garden.

COWAN STREET AYAM TAUGE & KOITIAU

Cowan Street

And proud to say, I don’t jump in the bandwagon. Okay, so I tend to possess this slightly haywire tastebud compared to the norms, but wanna know my vote for favourite ‘tauge ayam’ in Ipoh?

Cowan Street’s decades of legacy obviously. They started this whole ‘nga choy gai’ mania waaaaaayyyy back before my time, serving the much-revered chicken, bean sprouts and rice noodles medley by the roadside underneath some trees.

Marred by their notorious reputation of closing their business more often than not; in a very haphazardly manner at that, even the locals got fed up sometimes.

However, on the positive side, their flavourful rendition of poached chicken in a beautifully compelling sauce with a nutty hint, smooth ‘sar hor fun’ (the flat rice noodles you cannot find anywhere else) and crunchy bean sprouts are probably second to none. Small portion? Maybe. And slightly pricier too, but definitely worth the money forked out for.

LOU WONG TAUGE AYAM KUETIAU

Lou Wong Tauge Ayam Kuetiau

Hands down THE most popular place in Ipoh, and heck … probably all of Malaysia for good old ‘nga choy gai’. They have grown from strength to strength, albeit very stiff competition from Onn Kee situated beside AND diagonally opposite of them.

Yet, feedbacks have not been all rosy. Some have complained of poor quality control, and mediocre standard of service. There were times when the poached chicken arrived with unsightly and unpalatable bloody bits, especially at the flesh closest to the chicken thigh.

But still, can’t deny the lure of a late midnight feast here, dining under the stars (the real deal and the glitzy neon lights hovering from above), and slurping on smooth ‘sar hor fun’ and crunchy bean sprouts.

Oh, personally, I think Lou Wong still does the best blanched bean sprouts in Ipoh.

Ballet: ‘Being Different, Being Loved’

By | EVENTS CALENDER 活动月份 | No Comments

Synopsis: “Being Different, Being Loved”

Matilda (premiere 2010)

Matilda is a bright little girl who is very eager to learn. Her insensitive parents send her to a school run by Miss Trunchbull, a cruel authoritarian who loathes children. Matilda befriends her school teacher, Miss Honey. This musical adapted by Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin centres on Matilda, a precocious girl with the gift of telekinesis, who loves reading. Matilda overcomes obstacles caused by her family and school, and helps her teacher reclaim her life. The main idea of Matilda is that even if you are smaller or younger, if you set your mind to it you can achieve anything. Finally, even though she was different from other children, she found someone who loves her.

Wicked (premiere 2003)

Wicked, written by Winnie Holzman, music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. They were so different but they each just wanted to be loved. It is a story of their friendship.

Five things to learn from Wicked:

  1. Never judge from face value. The green-faced Elphaba was good while the great wizard was a fake.

  2. Friendship stands the test of time. (Elphaba and Glinda)

  3. Always help the lowly and outcast.

  4. Good deeds may not always be rewarded, but do them because “no good deed goes unpunished”.

  5. Keep getting up even if you fall, and you might just “defy gravity”.

Charity Fun Walk & Fun Run (28 Apr 2019)

By | EVENTS CALENDER 活动月份 | No Comments

Rotary Club of Kinta, District 3300 is a service organisation under the umbrella of Rotary International (RI). The charity fun walk and fun run are to raise awareness of polio, stroke and healthy lifestyle. We are supported by National Association of Stroke Malaysia (NASAM), Ipoh branch and Kelab Roadrunners (KRI), Ipoh.

Rotary Club of Kinta is organizing this charity fun walk and fun run to raise awareness of Poliomyelitis, stroke and healthy living. At the same time, we’re raising funds for End Polio Now campaign and to buy equipments for NASAM, Ipoh Branch.

Registered and Paid Participants are given a T-shirt, goodie bag and a certificate.

Polio (also known as poliomyelitis) is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system. Children younger than five years old are more likely to contract the virus than any other group. Malaysia is Polio free, however, polio is still persistent in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. Polio is transmitted through oro-faecal transmission thus we are still at risk due to migration. Rotary International (RI) has contributed significantly through efforts to eradicate Polio.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL IS ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN IMMUNISATION PROGRAMME IN AFFECTED COUNTRIES. ROTARY CLUB OF KINTA STRONGLY SUPPORTS THIS.

Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot, or bursts.

NASAM creates much awareness about stroke. They encourage everyone to take a more proactive role in caring for themselves. NASAM has centres in different parts of the country including Ipoh, where they provide rehabilitation services.

NASAM HIGHLIGHTS THAT THERE IS LIFE AFTER STROKE.

Healthy lifestyle is not only about eating a variety of healthy foods, it highlights being physically and mentally active as well. Eating healthy choices, being physically and mentally active is the best way to prevent illnesses.

LIFE IS NOT MERELY BEING ALIVE BUT BEING WELL.
